Lets’s get one thing straight. ZZ Birmingham is not a ZZ Top covers band from Birmingham.
He is a dedicated blues musician who presents the Blues Cruise programme on GFM radio each Tuesday from 9-10pm, repeated on Sundays 6-7pm.
ZZ plays an eclectic selection of blues, gospel, old time jazz, swing and more – mainly drawn from his huge collection of 2,000 vinyl albums and 2,000 CDs.
“Blues music is not all doom and gloom,” he says with a broad smile. “The songs say life is tough but it will be all right.”
ZZ has been presenting the Blues Cruise for six or seven years “to entertain and spread the word.
“Don’t forget that blues music is the root of so much of today’s pop music.”
A Sonny Boy Williamson album hooked him on the blues at 18. It helped him deal with the teenage angst he was feeling at the time.
In the words of bluesman Brian Robertson: “I am not here to explain the blues. Just the opposite. The blues are here to explain me.”
ZZ also likes this quote from the great Willie Dixon: “You can have the blues because your woman went away. Then you can have them the next day because she has come back.”
ZZ is available for solo gigs, with a duo or a band. Check his website zzbirmingham.com.
